The line separating premium mid-range smartphones from genuine flagships has become increasingly difficult to define. With the Xiaomi 17T Pro, Xiaomi attempts to blur it further by combining a flagship-class processor, a Leica-branded periscope camera, an unusually large battery and exceptionally fast charging in a device that launched in Malaysia from RM2,899.
That price is not inexpensive, but it remains considerably below the RM5,000 threshold now occupied by several ultra-premium phones. The more important question is whether the 17T Pro merely looks impressive on a specification sheet or delivers a genuinely convincing high-end experience.
Based on Xiaomi Malaysia’s official specifications and a week-long hands-on assessment published by SAYS, the answer is largely positive — although the phone is not without compromises. Its 5X telephoto camera, 7,000mAh battery and Dimensity 9500 processor are clear strengths, while its weight, software clutter and less impressive speaker performance prevent it from being an entirely effortless recommendation.
A Premium, Substantial Design
The Xiaomi 17T Pro is not a compact phone.
It measures 162.2 x 77.5 x 8.25mm and weighs 219g, making it a substantial device even before a protective case is added. The body uses a flat aluminium-alloy frame, while colour choices for Malaysia include Black, Deep Violet and Deep Blue.
Its relatively heavy construction is understandable given the 7,000mAh battery, large display and periscope camera system, but buyers moving from a smaller phone should expect a noticeable adjustment.
Durability is reassuring. Xiaomi specifies IP68 dust and water resistance, although the precise Malaysian test condition is immersion in static fresh water at a depth of up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes. It should not be described as waterproof, and Xiaomi warns that water resistance can deteriorate through normal wear, physical damage or repair work.
That 1.5-metre figure is worth noting because some third-party specifications have cited deeper submersion limits. Xiaomi Malaysia’s official documentation should be treated as the relevant reference for local units.
A Bright 144Hz AMOLED Display
The front is dominated by a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with a resolution of 2,772 x 1,280 pixels, 12-bit colour depth, full DCI-P3 coverage and an adaptive refresh rate of up to 144Hz.
It also supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, full-brightness DC dimming and Xiaomi’s Wet Touch Technology 2.0. Corning Gorilla Glass 7i provides additional protection.
Xiaomi advertises up to 3,500 nits of peak brightness, but this is an ultra-high-brightness measurement taken at APL25%, rather than a sustained full-screen output. Even so, the panel is designed to remain clearly visible outdoors and can dim to approximately one nit for more comfortable use in dark environments.
The display also carries four TÜV Rheinland eye-care certifications covering low blue light, flicker reduction, circadian-friendly viewing and intelligent eye-care functions. These certifications should not be interpreted as medical claims, but they reinforce Xiaomi’s emphasis on prolonged viewing comfort.
SAYS’ hands-on review was positive about the panel’s vibrancy and its ability to reduce glare during late-night use. The 144Hz ceiling should make navigation and supported games feel fluid, although actual refresh rates depend on the application and selected settings.
Dimensity 9500 Delivers Serious Processing Power
Inside, the Xiaomi 17T Pro runs on MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500, manufactured on a 3nm process.
The processor uses an all-big-core configuration led by a C1-Ultra core running at up to 4.21GHz, accompanied by three C1-Premium and four C1-Pro cores. Graphics are handled by the Mali G1-Ultra GPU, while MediaTek’s NPU 990 supports AI-related workloads.
All Malaysian configurations include 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, with UFS 4.1 storage capacities of 256GB, 512GB or 1TB. These are appropriately high-end memory and storage standards, helping the phone maintain quick application launches, responsive multitasking and strong data-transfer performance.
Thermal control is managed by Xiaomi’s 3D IceLoop System, which places the cooling structure close to the processor and uses high-conductivity thermal material to move heat away during demanding workloads.
During its week-long test, SAYS reported smooth mobile gaming at 60fps and found that the cooling system kept heat under control. However, the published review did not identify the game, graphics preset or test duration, so the observation is best treated as a positive real-world impression rather than a repeatable benchmark result.
The broader conclusion remains clear: this is a phone with genuine flagship-class processing hardware, not a mid-range platform being pushed beyond its natural limits.
HyperOS 3 Is Feature-Rich but Not Entirely Clean
The Xiaomi 17T Pro runs Xiaomi HyperOS 3, bringing features such as HyperIsland, HyperConnect, Circle to Search, Google Gemini and Xiaomi’s own AI tools for writing, speech recognition, interpretation, search, wallpaper creation and image editing. Availability may differ according to language, region, software version and application compatibility.
SAYS observed some pre-installed applications on the review device, although the unwanted apps could be removed quickly. It is a relatively minor inconvenience, but pre-installed promotional software does weaken the sense of polish expected from a phone approaching RM3,000.
Xiaomi Malaysia’s current product pages do not clearly publish a long-term operating-system upgrade commitment for the 17T Pro. Claims concerning a specific number of major Android upgrades should therefore not be presented as confirmed unless Xiaomi provides an explicit local support policy.
Leica Imaging with a Proper 5X Periscope Camera
The camera system is one of the strongest reasons to consider the Xiaomi 17T Pro.
It comprises a 50MP Light Fusion 950 main camera, a 50MP 5X periscope telephoto camera and a 12MP ultrawide camera, all organised around Leica-branded optics and Xiaomi’s Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant image profiles.
50MP Light Fusion 950 Main Camera
The primary camera uses a 1/1.31-inch Light Fusion 950 sensor with an f/1.67 aperture, optical image stabilisation and a 23mm-equivalent focal length.
Xiaomi also uses a hybrid 1G+6P lens structure and multiple optical coatings intended to reduce haze, flare, ghosting, stray light and colour cast.
One detail should be kept accurate: Xiaomi officially calls the component the Light Fusion 950. Its Malaysian materials do not identify Sony as the sensor supplier, so it should not be described as a Sony sensor without separate, authoritative confirmation.
50MP 5X Periscope Telephoto
The standout camera is the 50MP periscope telephoto, which offers a 115mm-equivalent focal length, f/3.0 aperture, optical image stabilisation and native 5X optical zoom.
Xiaomi also claims 10X “optical-grade” zoom through in-sensor processing, telemacro focusing from approximately 30cm and AI-assisted digital magnification reaching 120X.
The meaningful feature here is the native 5X focal length. Extreme 120X magnification is an AI-assisted digital endpoint and should not be confused with the detail or consistency of optical zoom.
SAYS found the telephoto camera particularly effective for portraits, where the longer focal length created flattering background compression and allowed crisp compositions without requiring the photographer to move unusually close to the subject.
That is precisely where a 5X periscope can add real value. It gives users a perspective that cannot be convincingly replicated by simply cropping an image from the main camera.
12MP Ultrawide
The third camera is a 12MP ultrawide with an f/2.2 aperture and 120-degree field of view.
It provides useful coverage for architecture, interiors and group photographs, although its specification is clearly less ambitious than the two 50MP cameras. There is no autofocus listed for the ultrawide on Xiaomi Malaysia’s official specification page.
Strong Video Features for Creators
The rear camera system supports recording at up to 8K 30fps and 4K 120fps, alongside 4K HDR10+, LOG recording, Movie mode, LUT support and a three-microphone array.
For more practical everyday production, 4K 60fps recording is supported in several modes, including HDR10+, LOG and cinematic telephoto video.
A 32MP front-facing camera handles selfies and video calls, with support for 4K HDR10+ recording at 30fps.
A 7,000mAh Battery Is the Headline Practical Upgrade
The Xiaomi 17T Pro carries a 7,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, one of the largest capacities found in a conventional high-performance smartphone.
Its silicon-carbon chemistry allows Xiaomi to increase energy density without making the phone excessively thick, although the 219g weight demonstrates that such capacity still carries a physical cost.
The battery proved dependable during busy weekend outings and substantially reduced concerns about running out of power. The review did not publish a standardised screen-on-time or battery benchmark, so the result should be read as a qualitative endurance assessment rather than an exact multi-day guarantee.
Charging specifications are equally impressive:
100W wired HyperCharge, 50W wireless HyperCharge, up to 22.5W wired reverse charging, and support for compatible 100W PPS adapters. Xiaomi’s laboratory figure indicates approximately 48 minutes for a complete wired charge, while SAYS recorded more than 50% after 30 minutes.
The 50W wireless figure requires an appropriately rated Xiaomi wireless charging set; an ordinary charging pad may operate at a considerably lower speed.
Connectivity and Audio
The Xiaomi 17T Pro includes Wi-Fi 7 capability, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, eSIM support on compatible Malaysian networks, an infrared blaster and dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio support.
Despite the impressive audio specification, SAYS found the loudspeakers underwhelming relative to the phone’s price and overall hardware quality. This is subjective, but it remains one of the few clearly identified weaknesses in the week-long hands-on test.
Users who normally rely on wireless earbuds may not consider this a major concern. Those who frequently watch videos or play games through the phone’s built-in speakers may find it more significant.

The Verdict
The Xiaomi 17T Pro is a compelling near-flagship because its strongest features address practical needs rather than merely filling a specification sheet.
The 7,000mAh battery tackles endurance anxiety. The Dimensity 9500 supplies genuine high-end performance. The 144Hz AMOLED display is bright, sharp and well equipped for entertainment, while the Leica 5X periscope adds photographic flexibility that many similarly priced phones still lack.
Its camera system is particularly persuasive. The main camera provides the large sensor and fast aperture expected at this level, while the 5X telephoto creates more natural portrait compression and far greater reach than a conventional 2X or 3X lens.
The compromises are equally clear.
At 219g, the phone is large and heavy. HyperOS 3 includes removable pre-installed software, the built-in speakers received a lukewarm assessment, and the 12MP ultrawide is less ambitious than the main and telephoto cameras. The RM2,899 starting price is competitive for the hardware, but it is no longer low enough to excuse every imperfection.
What Stands Out
The 5X Leica telephoto camera is the phone’s most distinctive imaging feature, delivering a genuinely different perspective for portraits, travel and event photography.
The 7,000mAh battery gives heavy users more breathing room, while 100W wired and 50W wireless charging reduce the inconvenience of replenishing such a large cell.
The Dimensity 9500 platform provides the performance foundation expected of a modern high-end Android phone.
The display combines a useful 1.5K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, high brightness and extensive eye-comfort features.
Final Take
At its RM2,899 launch price, the Xiaomi 17T Pro does not qualify as a bargain in the traditional sense. It instead offers a strategically selected set of flagship capabilities at a price below the ultra-premium tier.
For mobile photographers, frequent travellers, gamers and heavy users, the combination of a proper 5X periscope camera, powerful processor, large battery and rapid charging makes it one of the stronger performance-focused Android options in its class.
