Hotel Sosei Sapporo – MGallery Collection hailed as one of the “World’s Most Beautiful Hotels” by UNESCO’s Prix Versailles

Hotel Sosei Sapporo – MGallery Collection, a post-industrial icon reborn for the 21st Century, has been selected as one of the projects on the “World’s Most Beautiful Hotels List 2025” by Prix Versailles, the highly prestigious architecture and design awards.

Announced by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on 2nd June, the 2025 Prix Versailles awards celebrate 16 laureates, including Hotel Sosei Sapporo – MGallery Collection. These properties, all of them newly opened or reopened, are located in diverse parts of the globe, and each stands out for its superlative blend of heritage and innovation.

Jérôme Gouadain, Secretary General of the Prix Versailles, is thrilled with this year’s selection: “The common thread between these 16 extraordinary hotels is the fact that they all elevate expertise and local heritage. But more than that, they are all the fruit of extremely advanced design work, a reflection of clear, across-the-board collaboration between their creators and their regions. The artistic approach serves hospitality here by shining a light on its multiple influences and adding a touch of warmth, clarity and meaning, in order to construct what are undoubtedly some of the most beautiful destinations in the world.”

The fact that Hotel Sosei Sapporo – MGallery Collection was chosen by this highly respected jury as one of the 16 most beautiful hotels on the planet is an exceptional achievement and a great honour for this hotel, which opened its doors in January 2024.

Crafted by the architects at Taisei Corporation and with interior design by Studio Crow, Hotel Sosei Sapporo – MGallery Collection sits on the site of the 1876 Kaitakushi Brewery in the heart of this vibrant Japanese city. This historic location was the birthplace of Sapporo Beer and its legacy lives on today; not in barrels, but in the brick walls, reclaimed beams, and industrial design of this beautiful 118-key hotel.

The Bar Lounge is a modern reinterpretation of a beer cellar with a sculptural copper fireplace shaped like a brewing kiln

Its design concept is a tribute to Sapporo's heritage, where past meets present, East meets West, and timeless sophistication meets contemporary comfort. In the late 19th Century, Kaitakushi residences blended Western-style reception rooms with Japanese living quarters, reflecting a lifestyle where diplomacy met daily life. This concept has been reimagined in the hotel’s rooms, which seamlessly fuse warm wooden elements with soft washi textures and natural materials.

Guests are invited to embark on a four-part visual journey titled “Passion for Beer Research”, which pays homage to Seibei Nakagawa, Japan’s first brewmaster, with art installations that include a glowing wall built from recycled beer bottles and a copper fireplace shaped like a brewing kiln. And naturally, at the end of their day of discovery, travellers can sit back and sip a glass of Sapporo Draft in the very place where it all began, or a signature cocktail inspired by Hokkaido’s seasons. Begin not with directions, but with discovery.

As the MGallery Collection is all about immersive experiences, the hotel also offers a trip through history. With this unique M Moment, guests ride a traditional rickshaw through red-brick lanes and brewery chimneys, retracing the path where Sapporo’s beer culture began.

“The Prix Versailles is one of the world's most prestigious architecture and design accolades, so we are thrilled with this distinction. Having achieved the Prix Versailles for Manly Pacific Hotel Sydney - MGallery Collection in 2024, this latest accolade is another example of how MGallery is successfully crafting unique hotels that celebrate local culture and raise the standard of architecture and design in the hospitality industry. I would like to congratulate the entire team at Hotel Sosei Sapporo – MGallery Collection for this outstanding achievement,” said Elodie Noël, Global Senior Vice President - Design & Technical services, Sofitel, Sofitel Legend, MGallery and Emblems.

The architectural prizes discerned by the Prix Versailles aim to promote intelligent sustainability, in which culture serves and transcends the notion of the environment. Three hotels from the 2025 List will also receive the further distinction of a World Title – Prix Versailles, Interior or Exterior – to be awarded in December.
